About

The Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology is a vital specialty in dentistry that bridges the gap between medicine and dentistry. It focuses on the diagnosis, medical management, and radiographic evaluation of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial region. This department plays a key role in identifying oral manifestations of systemic diseases, managing chronic facial pain, temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs), and detecting potentially malignant and malignant conditions.

Radiology, an integral part of the department, involves the use of various imaging techniques such as intraoral radiographs, panoramic radiography (OPG), and advanced imaging like CBCT to support accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. Oral Medicine and Radiology also deals with the care of medically compromised patients and emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach to patient management.

The department is essential not only for clinical diagnosis and patient care but also for training dental students in diagnostic skills and radiographic interpretation, ensuring they are well-prepared to handle diverse clinical situations.

Aims and Objectives

Main Aim:

To diagnose, prevent, and manage diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial region through clinical evaluation and advanced radiographic techniques, with a focus on medically complex patients and oral manifestations of systemic diseases.

Key Objectives:

1.Clinical Diagnosis and Management

•To examine, identify, and diagnose diseases of the oral cavity, jaws, salivary glands, and related structures.
•To manage oral mucosal lesions, facial pain, temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs), and other non-surgical conditions.

2. Radiographic Imaging and Interpretation

•To utilize imaging techniques like intraoral radiographs, panoramic radiography (OPG), CBCT, and CT/MRI for diagnostic purposes.

•To interpret radiographs for early detection of dental and maxillofacial pathologies, including cysts, tumors, fractures, and developmental anomalies.

3. Integration with Systemic Health

•To recognize oral manifestations of systemic diseases (e.g., diabetes, HIV, anemia, autoimmune diseases).

•To coordinate with other medical disciplines for the management of patients with complex medical conditions.

4.Education and Training

•To train undergraduate and postgraduate dental students in oral medicine and radiology techniques, diagnosis, and treatment planning.

•To conduct case-based learning, seminars, and practical sessions on radiographic interpretation.

5. Research and Innovation

•To promote clinical research in the areas of diagnostic imaging, oral pathology, and pain management.

•To contribute to advancements in radiographic technology and diagnostic protocols.

6. Patient Awareness and Preventive Care

•To educate patients about early signs of oral cancer, precancerous lesions, and the importance of routine oral health screening.
•To implement tobacco cessation programs and oral cancer screening camps.

7.Emergency and Medically Compromised Patient Care

•To handle dental emergencies related to pain and infection.

•To assess and treat patients with underlying medical conditions requiring special care in dental settings.
